Voting Day in Far Rockaway: Tents, Generators & Masks, Oh My!

Beneath large white tents, with polling machines run by gas-powered generators, and donning face masks to keep the floating dust at bay, residents in the Far Rockaway area of Queens took time today to vote, time away from repairing, cleaning or gutting their flooded homes and businesses.  Making their way on foot, by bicycle, by bus, by car and by special shuttles, they flocked to temporary polling stations throughout the hurricane-devastated community, stations set up at schools and churches, at community centers and on street corners.

The location I visited at the 106 Street and Broadway Channel junction was very well organized, and with over 50 volunteers assisting voters throughout the day, the process appeared to run very efficiently.  Other locations, like the Beach and 66 Street area, were not so well organized, according to a couple volunteering at the polling station.  They shared that the generators cut in and out and that there weren't enough volunteers to keep up with the number of voters.

Soon enough, we will all know the results of the election and it will be a time to celebrate or a time to mourn...

What an amazing time for you to be there. Your pictures capture everything so beautifully. You will definitely need to publish a book.
