After spending the morning and afternoon with clients in Teller, we join Pastor Brian aboard his small skiff for the six mile ride to Brevig Mission, another Inupiaq community we are servicing. Brevig is home to 350 year-round residents who live a subsistence lifestyle of hunting, fishing and gathering.
The water is flat calm and the conversation between the three of us flows quickly and easily. Pastor Brian is the pastor of the Lutheran Churches in both Teller and Brevig and we are delighted with his stories, humor and knowledge of the area.
We land on a gravel beach and are greeted by racks of salmon drying, kids on four-wheelers and a light rain. Locals are curious about us and ask us as many questions as we do them. Our mutual curiosity provides a bridge across the cultural differences.
Thanks to Pastor Brian for spending so much time with us, for introducing us to several residents and for providing us with a small glimpse into this community.
