Every Sunday through the month of May, New York City artists will paint the side of buildings at 5 Pointz, a mecca for graffiti art in Long Island City, Queens.
When I asked these graffiti artists how they felt about painting over top of another artist's work, they all agreed that it was what was expected, and that they knew that in a year or two someone else would be painting over their work.
5 Pointz is a wonderful splash of color among brownstones, businesses and white-washed walls, and people who visit the area boost the local economy. For the past two years, the City has threatened to tear all of the existing buildings down and replace them with condos. The locals and business owners that I spoke with today and in past weeks all agree that this would be a really bad move for locals, for the businesses, for the artists and for New York City alike.
